Driftlands

A small, tropical island chain that rests at the ‘mouth’ of the inland sea as it opens up into the Great Sea. While the islands are too small and desolate to be of any use, winds blow to the Driftlands from all directions, causing debris from all directions to be wash up on the islands (although mostly from the East, as the islands serve as a ‘net’ catching refuse riding the currents out of the inland sea). At some point during recent history, the Evengian Empire began using the islands as a makeshift prison to hold criminals of nonviolent convictions. Mostly debtors and smugglers, some of the islands have become overwhelmed by the impromptu communities that have sprung up around them, exacerbating the already desperate lack of food and other resources and creating cutthroat cities where the only way to survive is to resort to crimes greater than the ones that sentenced you. Still some islands remained relatively untouched, with small groups of prisoners living on them in some measure of peace.

Lately a plague of unknown origin began spreading throughout the Driftlands, although it is believed to spread through the air and is highly contagious, it only seems to affect people above the age of thirty and remains completely confined to the Driftlands. Although such a feat is difficult, some have managed to escape the Driftlands to the Continent, where they can live somewhat normally as the Evengian government keeps few records of those sent to the Driftlands and cares little of what happens to them once they’ve been deposited.
